Comparing bare vs insulated copper wire scrap begins with what is included in the shipment. A load of exposed copper wire and a load of cable with its covering still attached are different material streams. Buyers should compare them through a clear specification and receiving process rather than relying on a trade name or an assumed recovery percentage.
What does bare copper wire mean?
Bare wire has no insulating covering, but that description alone does not establish a particular scrap grade. Ask whether it is coated, tinned, alloyed, contaminated or mixed with other material. Confirm physical condition and the written specification used by the seller.
Terms such as Millberry and bare bright are useful starting points for an enquiry. They should not be treated as interchangeable promises of an exact chemical purity or a published grade. Request the applicable specification and revision, along with evidence for any lot-specific claim.
What does insulated copper wire include?
Insulated wire carries a non-conducting covering, and cable constructions can also contain additional components. Ask for a breakdown of cable types and whether the conductor is identified as copper. Photographs may help describe the load, but they cannot establish the composition or recovery of every piece in a mixed shipment.
Ask the intended processor which cable streams it accepts. A receiver equipped for one type of material may require different sorting or documentation for another. Keep unknown cable and visibly different constructions separate until their treatment has been agreed.
Compare gross weight with recoverable material carefully
The weight of an insulated cable load includes its coverings and any other components present. Do not assume total shipment weight equals copper weight. If an estimated recovery figure is offered, ask how it was obtained and whether it applies to the actual lot.
A useful report explains the sample, method and calculation basis. A selected sample from one cable type may not represent a mixed load. Agree whether settlement depends on an estimate, a test or another documented procedure, and how a difference at receipt will be resolved.
Check contamination and condition
Ask about attachments, mixed metals, oil, non-metallic material and coatings relevant to the agreed specification. Inspect current lot photographs and consider an independent inspection where the order justifies it. Distinguish physical contamination checks from chemical analysis.
Do not use appearance alone as an acceptance test. A clean-looking surface does not prove the full composition, and a laboratory result does not automatically describe foreign objects throughout a bale. Record what each piece of evidence actually establishes.
Confirm packing and processing arrangements
Request package count, bale or container configuration, net weight and handling requirements. Tell the supplier about the receiver’s equipment and storage limitations before dispatch. Packages should be identified so incoming records can be matched to the offer.
Use trained personnel and approved industrial processing arrangements. Do not remove insulation by open burning or improvised chemical treatment. This comparison helps buyers describe material and ask questions; it does not provide cable-stripping or metal-recovery instructions.
Choose the stream your receiver can accept
Start with the receiving facility’s specification, then request a quotation for material that meets it. Compare quantity basis, inspection evidence, processing assumptions, delivery scope and rejection terms on the same basis. The right stream depends on the intended process and the written acceptance requirements.
ReMA maintains specifications for trading recycled materials. Consult the applicable current specification rather than assuming a simplified online description defines your contract. Supreme Galaxy’s copper listing should be discussed in terms of the specific available lot; this article does not claim that every material stream described here is stocked.
