To choose a tractor for a small farm, begin with a work list rather than acreage alone. A large open lawn and a smaller property with material handling and digging needs can call for very different equipment.
List jobs by frequency
Separate weekly work from occasional projects. Note mowing, moving soil, handling pallets, cultivating beds and digging. Estimate the area, material quantity and frequency for each. Consider hiring specialist equipment for a one-off heavy task rather than sizing your everyday tractor around it. Record what you genuinely need the purchased machine to do.
Measure your property
Measure gates, pathways, storage openings and turning areas. Identify slopes, soft ground, overhead obstacles and places where a loaded machine could approach an edge. Use operating dimensions with the relevant attachments fitted. A tractor that fits through a gate may still lack enough space to turn or use its loader there.
Match the implement first
Check the implement’s required PTO power, hitch category, hydraulic demand and mounting system. Engine horsepower is not the same as PTO power. Obtain written compatibility confirmation for the exact combination. Include ballast, guards, mounting kits and hydraulic connections in the cost instead of assuming the implement alone completes the setup.
Choose controls you can use
Try a supervised demonstration. Check travel control, visibility, seat adjustment and access to routine service points. If several people will operate the machine, plan familiarisation for each. Four-wheel drive can be useful, but approved slope limits, tyre choice and operating practice still determine where work can be performed.
Plan storage and servicing
Allow room for the tractor and detached equipment on suitable ground. Confirm local parts availability and access to competent servicing. Build a budget for fluids, filters, wear parts and transport. Used equipment should come with a condition assessment and service records, not simply an attractive hour reading.
Send a clear enquiry
Describe your main jobs, access width, terrain, preferred attachments and delivery location. Include photographs or measurements where helpful. Ask suppliers to explain how the proposed package meets those requirements. Compare complete quotations with the same equipment and delivery scope.
