Knowing how to use and maintain a Kubota BX23S helps you get more from its mowing, loading and digging capabilities. This guide is written for the Kubota BX23S Tractor Package – 154 Hours listed by Supreme Galaxy LDA.
The advertised package combines a used BX23S tractor with an LA340 front loader, BT603 backhoe and mid-mount mower deck. The listing specifies 154 working hours, four-wheel drive and hydrostatic transmission. Confirm the current hour reading, tractor serial number, mower model and attachment configuration at handover.
Kubota identifies the BX23S as a 21.6 gross horsepower sub-compact tractor with HST and 4WD. That engine rating does not describe how much the loader can safely lift. Use the manuals for your actual tractor, loader, backhoe and mower to establish operating limits, ballast requirements and maintenance procedures.

1. Check the Kubota BX23S before starting
Begin with a walk around the tractor and the work area. Identify holes, soft ground, slopes, branches and overhead obstacles. Keep children, pets and bystanders away, and do not carry passengers.
Check tyres for damage and the required pressure. Inspect oil and coolant levels as directed, look for leaks, and examine attachment pins, hoses, guards and fasteners. Check the condition of the seat belt, rollover protective structure (ROPS), lights and controls. Keep cooling screens clear of debris.
Use the manual’s functional tests for the starting interlocks, brakes and safety switches. Stop and correct faults before working. Never defeat a safety switch to keep an attachment running.
Operate with the folding ROPS upright and locked and the seat belt fastened. Kubota advises folding it only when absolutely necessary for clearance, then raising and locking it again promptly. Do not wear the seat belt with the ROPS folded; plan work to retain rollover protection wherever possible.
2. Start and drive the hydrostatic tractor
- Sit in the operator’s seat and adjust it before starting.
- Apply the parking brake, disengage the PTO and set travel controls as directed in the BX23S manual.
- Follow the specified diesel preheat and starting sequence. Start only where exhaust can disperse safely.
- Check the instruments and allow the prescribed warm-up before applying load.
- Practise forward movement, reversing, stopping and turning in a clear area with attachments safely positioned.
The HST treadle pedal controls travel direction and speed. Learn its response before approaching buildings, people or obstacles. Engine speed and pedal movement have different roles: choose the engine setting required for the task and use smooth pedal inputs to control movement.
Select the appropriate travel range using the procedure in the manual. Do not force a range change or assume it can be made while moving. Use 4WD and the differential lock only in the conditions specified by Kubota. Slow down for turns and keep clear of unstable edges.
Before leaving the seat, park securely, disengage the PTO, lower attachments, apply the parking brake, stop the engine and remove the key. Wait for all movement to stop.
3. Use the LA340 front loader
Check loader mounting hardware, hydraulic connections and bucket attachment before work. Confirm the approved ballast and the capacity applicable to the fitted loader and bucket. Bucket type and load position matter; do not use a single advertised lift figure for every job.
Work with smooth controls and carry material low for travel. Avoid sudden turns, side loading and moving with a high bucket. Keep people clear and never use the bucket as a work platform. Do not alter hydraulic relief settings to increase lifting force.
Practise raising, lowering and bucket movement in a clear area. Keep loads within the equipment’s limits and remember that dense wet material can weigh much more than dry material of the same volume.
4. Use the BT603 backhoe
Before excavation, identify underground services and establish a safe digging plan. Ground conditions and trench edges must be assessed; a small backhoe can still damage cables or pipes and destabilise an excavation.
Keep the loader fitted when using the BT603, as required by the BX23S instructions. Check backhoe mounting security and use the prescribed stabiliser and loader-bucket setup on suitable ground. Operate only from the backhoe seat and keep everyone outside the swing area. Do not undermine the tractor or stabilisers.
Learn the control pattern without a digging load. Use controlled cuts within the backhoe’s capability. Before travelling, return the equipment to its prescribed transport position and engage the required locks. Follow the manual when rotating the seat or entering and leaving the backhoe operating area.
5. Mow with the mid-mount deck
Identify the mower deck model before selecting height settings or ordering parts. The package listing does not establish its exact cutting width. Inspect blades, belts, guards, discharge protection and PTO connections using the deck manual.
Remove stones and loose objects from the lawn. Keep people away from the discharge area and stop mowing if someone enters the work zone. Follow the mower’s procedure for deck lowering, PTO selection, engagement and engine speed; do not guess from the tractor’s throttle position.
Adjust travel speed to grass conditions. Slow down when the cut becomes uneven or the engine struggles, and avoid forcing the mower through dense growth. Disengage the blades for travel without cutting and follow the manual’s restrictions on reverse mowing and slopes.
Never clear a blockage, adjust the deck or inspect blades while components can move. Stop the engine, remove the key and wait for the blades to stop. Support raised equipment with approved mechanical supports before working underneath.
6. Plan maintenance for a tractor listed at 154 hours
A 154-hour reading is useful when planning ownership, but it does not prove that the first service or later checks were completed. Obtain invoices or a service log and compare the dates and hours with the applicable Kubota schedule. Calendar-based work may be due even on a lightly used tractor.
Use the model-specific maintenance schedule rather than a generic tractor timetable. If records are incomplete, ask a Kubota technician to assess the machine and establish a documented service baseline. Do not assume every fluid needs replacement solely because the meter reads 154 hours.
| Area | What to review | What determines the work |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | Oil, oil filter, fuel filters, air cleaner and cooling system | BX23S service schedule, approved fluids and condition |
| Transmission and hydraulics | Fluid level, leaks, filters and service history | Required lubricant and hour/calendar intervals |
| LA340 loader | Grease points, hoses, pins and mounting hardware | Loader lubrication plan and specified tightening torques |
| BT603 backhoe | Grease points, mounting security and bucket condition | Backhoe manual and operating-hour record |
| Mower deck | Blades, belt, bearings, PTO driveline and guards | Exact deck model and its maintenance instructions |
Loader and backhoe lubrication have their own requirements; servicing the engine alone does not maintain the complete package. Use the specified grease and service each point in the attachment lubrication plan. Have damaged hoses, worn pins and loose mounting assemblies assessed before further use.
For fluid servicing, confirm capacities, drain locations and approved replacement products first. Keep dirt out of hydraulic connections. Do not open a hot pressurised radiator, refuel a running or hot engine, or search for pressurised hydraulic leaks with your hands.
Record the date, hours, parts, fluids and work completed. Add the next due date or hour reading for each item. Kubota’s My Kubota resources provide access to manuals and model-specific maintenance information for supported equipment.
After work and before storage
Park and shut down safely, then remove accumulated grass and dirt with the engine off. Clean cooling areas using Kubota’s prescribed methods, and avoid directing pressure water at sensitive electrical parts or seals. Inspect for new leaks or damage as you clean.
Follow the tractor and attachment manuals for fuel, battery and storage preparation. Loader or backhoe removal requires the correct parking supports and sequence; arrange a demonstration rather than improvising. Repeat the pre-use inspection before returning the package to work.
