1. Prepare your Philips LatteGo 5500
Read the supplied safety booklet. Fill the water tank with drinking water and the hopper with plain coffee beans, then switch on. Follow the setup prompts and rinse LatteGo before use. Avoid caramelised or flavoured beans.
Preparing the AquaClean filter
If fitting AquaClean, prepare it before installation: shake it for about five seconds, then immerse it upside down in cold water until bubbles stop. Fit it firmly in the tank and refill with fresh water. Complete activation through the machine’s on-screen instructions; inserting the filter alone does not activate it.
Keep the filter status in view and follow replacement prompts. Use the activation procedure for your model rather than copying button instructions intended for a different Philips series.
2. Brew an espresso or black coffee
- Place a cup beneath the coffee outlet and adjust its height.
- Select Espresso, Coffee or Americano, or browse More Drinks.
- Use the arrows and OK control to adjust available settings.
- Press Start/Stop to brew; press again to end coffee dispensing early.
The machine handles grinding and brewing automatically. Start with the default recipe, taste it, and change one preference at a time.
3. Make cappuccino or latte with LatteGo
- Join the milk container to its frame until it clicks.
- Attach the assembled LatteGo securely to the machine.
- Add refrigerated milk without exceeding MAX.
- Position a cup to catch both milk and coffee.
- Select a milk recipe, adjust settings and press Start/Stop.
Keep the container and frame clean and correctly assembled to prevent leakage.
4. Make an iced coffee
Choose an iced recipe and prepare a suitable glass with ice before brewing, following the quantities shown by your machine or quick-start guide. The Philips LatteGo 5500 does not dispense refrigerated coffee: its iced programme brews warm coffee at a lower temperature and slower flow than normal espresso. Ice cools the finished drink.
A longer brewing cycle and a different pump sound can therefore be normal for an iced recipe. This process differs from traditional cold brew, which steeps coffee over many hours. Leave enough room in your glass for the chosen coffee and milk quantities.
5. Personalise your coffee
The colour display lets you customise drink strength, coffee volume and milk quantity. The EP5547/90 offers four personal profiles plus a guest option. Choose your profile before adjusting your recipe and follow the display to save or retain preferences for later use.
For stronger drinks, explore the ExtraShot option where available. Change strength or volume first before experimenting with grind size; this makes it easier to identify which adjustment gives the taste you prefer.
Adjust the grinder carefully
Only change the grinder setting while beans are being ground. Start a black coffee, then press down the adjustment knob in the hopper and turn it one notch. Clockwise makes the grind coarser; anticlockwise makes it finer. Never force the knob while the grinder is stopped or move several notches at once.
Brew two or three cups before judging the result. Philips recommends letting a new machine settle in for approximately 100–150 cups before changing its factory grind setting.
Using pre-ground coffee
For occasional decaf or another ground coffee, wait until the machine is switched on and ready. Add only one level scoop using the supplied measuring spoon to the separate pre-ground compartment, then select the pre-ground option for your drink. Do not put powder in the bean hopper. Excess powder can be discarded by the machine instead of brewed.
Which 20 coffee recipes can you choose?
Philips lists the following selection for its 20-recipe 5500 version. Confirm the menu on your actual machine.
| Hot recipes | Iced recipes |
|---|---|
| Espresso, coffee, americano, cappuccino, latte macchiato, caffè crema, caffè latte, travel mug, espresso lungo, ristretto, flat white, café au lait | Iced coffee, iced latte macchiato, iced americano, iced caffè crema, iced cappuccino, iced café au lait, iced caffè latte, iced espresso |
Hot water and frothed milk are also available on supported versions.
6. Clean the machine after use
- After milk drinks: separate LatteGo’s two main parts and wash under the tap or in the dishwasher. A quick rinse programme does not replace thorough cleaning.
- Daily: empty the drip tray, or sooner if the red full indicator rises.
- When prompted: empty the grounds container.
- Weekly: rinse the brew group with lukewarm water and clean the grounds container and water tank.
- Monthly: follow the Philips coffee-oil-remover cleaning procedure.
Switch the machine off before removing the brew group, let it finish shutting down, and follow the manual’s removal instructions. Allow the group to air-dry before reinstalling. Philips also recommends brew-group lubrication every two months using the specified grease. Follow descaling prompts and the approved procedure for your exact machine.
