Understanding dry vs green firewood helps you choose logs for immediate use or for storage while they dry. The word “dry” in an advert is a starting point for questions, not a substitute for checking moisture. Match your order to your appliance, available storage and the time before you intend to burn it.
Decide when you need the logs
If you need fuel soon, request firewood with a stated moisture specification and ask how it was measured. Green firewood requires drying before it is suitable for efficient wood burning. The drying period varies with species, split size, weather and storage conditions, so avoid relying on a universal number of months.
Ask whether the supplier is offering seasoned, kiln-dried or green logs, and what that description means for the batch. Confirm the species or species mix and whether the material is clean and untreated. Never use painted or treated timber as ordinary firewood.
Check moisture rather than appearance
EPA wood-burning guidance recommends seasoned wood with moisture below 20 percent. Use a suitable wood moisture meter according to its instructions, checking representative logs rather than one convenient piece. Measure a freshly exposed interior surface where the meter guidance calls for it; an exterior surface can give a misleading impression of the whole log.
Ask the supplier about its sampling method and whether the stated figure refers to typical stock or your load. Bark condition, colour and surface cracks are not enough to prove that a delivery is ready to burn. If readings are uncertain or inconsistent, keep the logs separate and seek guidance before using them.
Agree on size and quantity
Check the maximum log length and other fuel requirements in your stove or fireplace manual. Ask for the supplied length range and whether logs are split. Oversize pieces may be awkward to store or unsuitable for your appliance. Do not assume photographs show the dimensions of the delivery you will receive.
Request a clear quantity basis: weight, loose volume, stacked volume, crate size or another stated measure. Those units are not interchangeable without additional information. Moisture and stacking affect comparisons, so compare offers with the same unit and packing description. Confirm delivery and unloading costs in writing.
Plan storage with airflow
Prepare storage before the vehicle arrives. Keep firewood outdoors off the ground, protect the top from rain and allow air to circulate around the sides, following EPA guidance. Avoid creating a tightly wrapped pile that traps moisture. Maintain a stable stack and leave access for checking and moving the logs.
Separate newly delivered green wood from ready-to-use stock and identify delivery dates. Check the pile after prolonged wet weather. Bring indoors only the amount appropriate for your household routine and follow the appliance manufacturer’s guidance on safe clearances and fuel storage.
Use suitable fuel and maintain the appliance
Burn only suitable dry fuel, operate the appliance as instructed and arrange the maintenance and chimney inspections recommended for your installation. Do not compensate for poor fuel by changing settings outside the manufacturer’s instructions. Smoke, unusual operation or damaged components need attention from a qualified professional.
For a useful quotation, provide the required log length, quantity unit, delivery location and whether you need ready-to-use wood or green stock for seasoning. Ask for batch moisture information and keep the delivery documents for reference.
